Cristina Casalone graduated in Veterinary Medicine at the University of Turin in 1995. She followed a Specialization Course in "Animal production and animal-derived food" in 1997 at the University of Parma and in 1999 she graduated cum laude as Specialist in Laboratory Animals Science" at the University of Milan. In 1995 she started to work at the Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale of Piemonte, Liguria and Valle d’Aosta where she joined the Neuropathology group, working on TSEs. Since 2001 she is Head of the Neuropathology Laboratory of the Italian Reference Centre for TSEs (CEA). She has gained a remarkable experience in the diagnosis of TSEs, especially regarding histology, immunohistochemistry, immunobiochemistry and in differential diagnosis of neuropathological diseases. In 2004, she worked to discover a new BSE phenotype, named BASE. In 2012 she applied for an Industrial invention with title: “Novel transgenic animal model of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis”. She is author of papers published on Italian and international journals with impact factor and referee for international peer reviewed journals. Moreover, she is author of chapters in scientific books. She also has a wide experience in training on TSEs, consisting in numerous training courses for veterinarians, lab staff and farmers. She is the scientific responsible or coordinator of several research projects funded by the Italian Ministry of Health, Piedmont Region and other national and international organizations (EU and USDA). She participated in defining guidelines for BSE management for DISCOONTOOLS European project. She joined the Network of excellence - Prevention, Control and Management of Prion Disease (NEUROPRION) and at the end of the European project she became member of Neuroprion Association.
